Join the Coro Fellows Pittsburgh class of 2016 for a Mixer at Duke’s Grocery while they are visiting D.C. for National Affairs Week, a part of completing their group project in Sto-Rox. The Fellows will provide a short briefing on their Sto-Rox group project and how their time in D.C. benefits the community. All Coro alumni from all centers are invited to attend!

As a capstone to their year of partnership-building and service in the Pittsburgh community of Sto-Rox, the Coro Fellows will be in D.C. in April to work with legislators and policy experts on advancing issues in education, transportation, and civic engagement. The goals of the Coro Fellows are to explore the interests of Sto-Rox on a state and national level and to bring the knowledge gained back to the community.

The Coro Fellows are focusing on the following issue areas during their group project:
Education
Sto-Rox School District + Propel Montour: The Coro Fellows are working to learn from the case studies of successful public school district and charter school relationships, in hopes of providing a path toward a more cooperative relationship and, ultimately, improving educational outcomes for all Sto-Rox students.

Transportation
Enhancing Transportation Options: Lack of a robust transportation infrastructure has reduced mobility and independence, increased isolation, and made it difficult for residents to access services, as approximately 60% of Sto-Rox residents do not own a car. The Coro Fellows are working with the Youth Partnership to support potential interventions around transportation for after-school programming, and will present broader recommendations as to improving transportation in the community.

Civic Engagement
Improving methods of Civic Engagement: Municipal meetings in both McKees Rocks and Stowe Township are sparsely attended, and multiple residents to whom the Coro Fellow cohort has spoken have expressed a disconnect from their local government and surrounding neighborhoods. The Coro Fellows will work to provide recommendations as to increasing resident participation, more effectively and equitably distributing information, and strategies for Sto-Rox residents to engage with local, state, and national legislators and policy shapers.

This event is free to attend and the Coro Fellows look forward to connecting with you on April 27th!
